Thomas Vance Slane, Sr, 69, passed away on April 10, 2024, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his father Willis H Slane, Jr and his mother Doris S Slane. He is survived by his sons Thomas V Slane, Jr and Bryce H Slane, both of High Point, his brother Willis H Slane, III (Caroline) of Lewisville, NC, his brother Robert C Slane (Sandy) of Cape Canaveral, Florida, and many cousins and nephews. Tom is also survived by his soul mate and longtime love, Sherrie Yarborough, who brought tremendous joy to Tom’s life.
Tom graduated from Woodberry Forest School in Orange, Virginia, attended University of Richmond, and graduated from High Point University. Tom's love of boats led him to start Slane Marine in High Point, NC, specializing in the refurbishment and repair of older Hatteras yachts. His refits are well known for their high level of craftsmanship and his encyclopedic knowledge of Hatteras yachts was world renowned. Tom delivered his final boat, Lyfe Time, in December, just days before receiving a bone marrow transplant.
Tom was also a seasoned pilot, a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, and a volunteer for the High Point Regional Cancer Center. He often enjoyed spending his free time working on projects in his garage to the sound of his favorite beach music bands. His humble attitude combined with his life stories, positive outlook, and sense of humor often made him the most charismatic person in the room. Tom never met a stranger, just friends he had not met yet and was always more concerned for others than he was for himself.
With his unwavering positive outlook on life, sense of humor, and mechanical aptitude, Tom could fix anything; we just wish he were still here to fix our broken hearts.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for their care and compassion.
A celebration of Tom’s life will be held at a future date.
