Nelson Joseph Burkhard, 84, of High Point, NC, formerly of Dryden, NY passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 27, 2021, at High Point Medical Center. He was surrounded by family and friends.
Nelson was born on September 28, 1936, in Rochester, NY. He was the son of the late Henry Burkhardt and Cecilia Burkhardt. Nelson served in the United States Army for five years and later was a plumber and employed at Cornell University in Ithaca NY for over a decade. In his free time, he greatly enjoyed teaching Woodworking to local 4-H kids. Many remember how he impacted neighborhood kids by helping them with bike repairs, and as they grew up, that turned into many automotive questions.
“Content and happy”, is how all would describe Nelson. He had a way of positively impacting everyone he came in contact with. He could “talk your ear off” and make you laugh until you cried.
Nelson is at peace in his heavenly home, but those whose lives he touched will never be the same.
He is survived by his loving wife, Judy Perry Burkhard of almost 40 years; beloved daughter, Tammy and grandkids, Jake and Taylor of Lewisville, NC; Rob and Mary Kay Denton of Webster, NY and several other cousins. In addition, “extended family”, Bill, Mattie, David, and Marc Umscheid and Jill Denning. Along with many other friends.
A mass will be held at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in High Point, NC on Wednesday, May 5, 2021, at 11:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that a donation be made to the Humane Society of the Piedmont, 4527 West Wendover Ave., Greensboro, NC 27409.
Wright Funerals-Cremations is in charge of arrangements.
