Martha Carter Mattocks

High Point

Martha Carter Mattocks, 71, of High Point, died March 16, 2019.

A memorial service will be held at Jamestown Friends Meeting on Saturday, March 23, 2019 at 2:00 PM with visitation to follow the service.

The oldest child of the late Conrad Norwood and Barbara Lasley Carter, Martha was born June 5, 1947 in Richmond, Virginia. She graduated from South Mecklenburg High School in 1965 and Guilford College in 1969. In 1969 she married Clarence Vance Mattocks, and they would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this summer.
Following graduation from Guilford College, Martha was a high school social studies teacher in Richmond. She then worked at the dental research center at Chapel Hill while her husband attended law school. Her love of UNC sports grew from her time in Chapel Hill.  Clarence and Martha moved to High Point where Clarence practiced law and Martha devoted her time to raising her two daughters.

Martha was dedicated to serving the community.  Among her numerous volunteer roles, she served as president of the High Point Junior Woman’s Club and was named 1980 Club Woman of the Year.  She was also a charter member of the Friends of High Point Public Library.

Her community involvement reached people at all stages of their lives. As a young mother, she volunteered to transport babies for Children's Home Society. She was also actively involved in the PTA, serving as PTA president for Kirkman Park Elementary School and then PTA president for the district. She received the High Point PTA Council Laurin Welborn Award in recognition of her work with the Kirkman Park PTA.  Martha also served as a Sunday school teacher and clerk of the Young Friends Committee at Springfield Friends Meeting.  She continued her work with Springfield Friends, more recently by serving as a member of the Springfield Memorial Association.

As an active member of Jamestown Friends Meeting, Martha clerked the United Society of Friends Women, served on the Friends Homes Board, and the board of Friends Center at Guilford College. She also enjoyed singing in the choir.  She spent many years serving on the board and as the board chair of Mobile Meals of High Point, an organization which provides and delivers hot meals to senior citizens in need.  Most of all, Martha loved her family and friends and brought light and laughter to all who knew her.

She is survived by her husband, Clarence, and 2 daughters, Wendy M. Mattocks of High Point, Robyn M. Huffstetler (Seth) of Charlotte, two grandchildren, Eliza and Luke Huffstetler, and sister, Susan Carter-Hope.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mobile Meals of High Point, PO Box 6666, High Point, NC 27262, the Barbara L. Carter Scholarship Fund, c/o Sedgefield United Methodist Church, 2830 Dorchester Place, Charlotte, NC 28209, or to Jamestown Friends Meeting, 509 Guilford Road, Jamestown, NC 27282.
