James Ernest Thompson Obituary

James Ernest Thompson, (Jim), 78, of High Point, North Carolina, was called home to our Lord on Wednesday, April 21, 2021, at Hospice Home at High Point.

Born September 9, 1942, in Alamance County, Jim was the son of the late Arch Thompson and the late Azalea Leonard Thompson. He attended NC State University, was a retired supervisor with American Express, and a devout member of Deep River Church of Christ.

Jim was full of life, he greatly loved the Lord, he was always smiling and laughing at his own corny jokes, never letting things get in his way from being happy as well as trying to help and encourage others. Early on in life, Jim was a recreational pilot and avid mechanic. He always loved to learn new things relating to science and history; extremely intelligent, he was always surprising others with his encyclopedic, mind of facts.  After retirement, Jim spent most of his time working on a horse farm, where you could find him bush-hogging, mending fences, helping with the rescue horses, or playing with the numerous chickens they owned, with his beloved wife, Carolyn.

Jim is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Carolyn Cagle Thompson of the home; daughters, Donna Smith and husband Bob of Florida, and Ellen Haggerty of High Point; grandchildren, B.J. Thompson, Joe Thompson, Renae Altman, Will Haggerty, and Ethan Haggerty; and eleven great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his brother, Bennie Thompson, and his son, Billy Thompson, who also passed in 2021.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held on May 15, 2021 at 2pm at Wright Funerals-Cremations in High Point, North Carolina.

Family visitation will be immediately after the service.
