Jacquelyn Kurtz Obituary

KURTZ, Jaquelyn Hull of Colfax, previously of Berwyn, Pennsylvania, died peacefully on March 19, 2023, with her family by her side. Jackie was born March 3, 1934 to William Benjamin Hull and Elva Giddens Hull in Lakeland, Florida. She was predeceased by her parents, her beloved husband of almost 60 years, Richard Everett Kurtz, her sisters, Elizabeth Ann Hull Martin and Emily Hull Hamby, and her niece, Susan Hamby Willis.

Jackie is survived by her three children, Kimberley Kurtz Burkhalter (Howell), Lisa Kurtz Tully (Robert) and Richard Everett Kurtz, II (fiancé Alyson Goods).  She was a very proud GrandJackie to her 10 grandchildren, Dean Benjamin Burkhalter (Dudley), Megan Burkhalter Irvin (Bryan), Melissa Tully Barr (William), Jackson Haskell Tully, Katherine Burkhalter Kennedy (Kenneth), Caroline Jacquelyn Tharp (Ross), Zachary David Kurtz, Eleanor Nicole Kurtz, Sara Elizabeth Burkhalter, and Duncan Thomas Kurtz, and to her 10 great-grandchildren, Miles Andrew Barr, Liam James Barr, James Commander Burkhalter, Judah Lewis Irvin, Eliot Robert Kennedy, Eva Grace Barr, Ezra Keller Irvin, Jack Bruce Burkhalter, Walter Max Kennedy and Arlo Dalton Kennedy.

Jackie is also survived by her brother-in-law, Joe R. Hamby of Gainesville, Florida, her niece, Debra Martin Back, and her nephews Clyde Martin, Michael Martin, and Robert Hamby, as well as numerous Kurtz nieces and nephews in Pennsylvania, all of whom she dearly loved.

Jackie graduated from the University of Florida in 1955 with a BA in Education.  She taught 5th grade in public school systems in Broward County, Florida and Montgomery County, Maryland for several years before starting a family.

Jackie was a 50+ year resident of Berwyn, Pennsylvania, and a winter resident of Vero Beach, Florida.  She was a member of Waynesborough Country Club in Paoli, Pennsylvania, and the Orchid Island Golf & Beach Club in Vero Beach, Florida, where she played golf into her 80’s, and maintained strong friendships with her golfing gals.

Jackie was a long-time member of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Berwyn, serving as Elder, newsletter editor, and many other positions.   Her family would like to thank the members and staff of Trinity for their ministry, love, care and kindness given to our mother and family over the years.

Jackie moved to Colfax, North Carolina in 2020 to be closer to family, and found River Landing at Sandy Ridge to be warm and friendly.  She instantly made close friends with many neighbors, all of whom her family thanks for their friendship, care, and concern for our mother.

Jackie was the heart of our close family.  Her enjoyment of cooking and home décor, her passion for golf, and her dedication to church and to charitable giving have influenced all of us. She was a consummate hostess, a generous gift-giver who never forgot a birthday, and an organizer of many family trips which we remember gratefully.

A service of remembrance will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 25, 2023 at River Landing at Sandy Ridge, 1575 John Knox Drive, Colfax, NC 27235 with reception to follow.

Interment will be in the Penningtonville Presbyterian Cemetery in Atglen, Pennsylvania at a later date.
