Ida Marie Cook Peninger Friend

Charlotte

Ida Marie Cook Peninger Friend, 80, of Charlotte, passed away Thursday, March 12, 2020, at Atrium Health in Pineville.

Born to Glenn Cook Sr. and Louise Black Cook of Charlotte, NC, she was preceded in death by her parents and six of her siblings, Glenn Cook Jr., Margaret Drake, Helen Reed, Donnie Cook, Jimmy Cook, and Phil Cook. She was also preceded in death by her first husband Donald Vann Peninger Sr., and Johnny “Buck” Friend, her second husband.

She is survived by her three sons, Philip Terry Peninger (Jennifer), Douglas Wayne Peninger (Rick), and Wesley Irvin Peninger (Elizabeth); and four grandchildren, Dylan Peninger, Alex Peninger, Payton Peninger and Hannah Peninger. She is also survived by her sister, Brenda Cook Baker (Ken) and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Ida worked for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System for thirty years and retired as the cafeteria manager of Oakdale Elementary school. She enjoyed her work and loved the smiling faces of the children and teachers.

Ida was of the Baptist faith and a longtime member of Southside Baptist church on Elmhurst Road in Charlotte, NC. She loved being active in her Sunday school class and singing the hymns of the faith. Throughout her life she read and studied scripture as it guided her in her daily life. She instilled this same transforming faith in her children and grandchildren.

Ida loved to laugh and dance, especially to beach music. Many times, the family enjoyed watching her, and her brother Phil, dance the afternoon away. In her later years, while living at the Pavilion at Brightmore in Ballantyne, Ida enjoyed being a social butterfly. Highlights of her time there include the Senior Prom sponsored by Ardrey Kell High School, making jewelry, jigsaw puzzles, and sing-a-longs with visiting musicians. She also enjoyed having meals with her special friends “The Lunch Bunch.” Some of her prized possessions included her hats as she would often wear one to make her feel special.

A celebration of life and worship service is being planned.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that everyone try to live as Jesus did. Donations may be sent to anyone in need.
