Betty Marie (Kirkley) Lowdermilk of Greensboro was born in Cheraw, South Carolina to Marie and Dan Kirkley in November of 1933. She left this Earth on October 13, 2020.
She began her working career with Burlington Industries in the 1950's. After making a brave decision to request her then-ill daughter be transported to the Mayo Clinic to be the 5th survivor of open-heart surgery in 1960, she and her family moved to Greensboro, NC.
She later gave birth to an amazing young man with Down Syndrome. She spent her entire life ensuring that he had every opportunity, continued education, and the best care available.
After ending her career with Burlington Industries, Betty studied hard to become a state certified Dietary Manager. She began her second career at Greene Nursing Home in Greensboro. She later accepted a position with High Point Care Center, where she worked until retirement.
She spent her life providing for others, both in her immediate family and for those she served in the later stages of their life. She was tough as nails but had a soft heart. She was a continuous supporter of ARC and Forsyth Group Homes.
She loved Conway Twitty and Elvis, because they were "good looking men". She loved deviled eggs, chicken and dumplings, field peas, scuppernong grapes, sweet tea, egg custard pie, butter pecan ice cream, Little Debbie swiss rolls, 5th Avenue candy bars, and Hershey milk chocolate "nuggets".
Betty loved her family above all else. Surviving are her daughter Darlene Pleasants (Rich Nelson) of High Point; son James Lowdermilk of Winston Salem; Granddaughter Alison Banther (David) of High Point; Grandson Jason Rubley (Natalie) of Kernersville; also surviving are her Great-grandchildren Daniel, Cora, and Grace.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Dan and Marie Kirkley of Cheraw, SC; and her brother Bo Kirkley, also of Cheraw, SC.
