William "Bill" Plowboy Johnson

William (Bill) M. Johnson, 78, of Archdale, North Carolina, passed peacefully from this Earth into the arms of his Lord and Savior Thursday, February 28, 2019 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Bill was born in Surry County to Alexander L. Johnson and Ida Mae Emerson Johnson on October 23, 1940.  He attended Trinity High School.  He married Ellen Sexton on December 15, 1957 in South Carolina. After farming the tobacco fields, he spent his remaining years in the trucking industry as one of the best stick haulers and in that time owned three companies.  He was a very active member of Trinity Memorial United Methodist Church since 1984, where he was involved in Methodist Men, Hands for Homes, Frank Grant Horseshoe Tournament, and the Choir. Bill was a man who truly enjoyed life and had many hobbies including golf, cruising on the pontoon on Badin Lake, riding his motorcycle, playing horseshoes and cornhole (and if you were his partner you better be a winner).  His favorite baseball team was the Cincinnati Reds.  He was a lifelong Carolina Tarheels fan but also became an Appalachian State Fan when his beloved grandsons Cade, Jesse, Jake and Tyler attended.  He was an avid Nascar fan, traveling many miles on his Goldwing with friends. His love for competition led him to be a competitor in the GATR series (Great American Truck Racing) for many years.  While racing he found himself in the winner’s circle in Atlanta and Nashville as well as winning the Truck Rodeo in Dover.

In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his brothers Harry, Wade, Floyd, Ellis, Alexander “Red”, and beloved twin Buck; sisters Sadie, Agnes, Jessie Irene and Faye.

Bill is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 61 years, Ellen; sons, Dwight Johnson and wife Tonya of Lexington, Darrell Johnson and wife Sherrie of Trinity; daughters Sheila Johnson Journey and husband Tim of Trinity, Heather Weatherman and husband Darren of Sophia; grandsons Cade Johnson and wife Jesette, Jesse Johnson ,Jake Johnson and fiancé Ivey, Tyler Myers and fiancé Katie, Jeremiah Johnson and Richard Johnson; granddaughters Kylie Foster and husband Jay, Danielle Weatherman, and Madie Johnson; great-grandson Alex Foster; special niece Carla Brewer; and many other nieces and nephews.
