Stuart McCarty

High Point

Stuart McCarty, 94, a kind, generous man, died at home on May 11, 2017, from complications of Parkinson’s Disease.

Born in Kenosha, Wisconsin to Hazel Beagle and Earl Hauser McCarty, Stuart grew up in Lake Geneva, WI and Del Ray Beach, FL.  After living in Binghamton, NY for 14 years and Rochester NY for 33 years, he was a resident of High Point, NC since 2010.

Stuart studied Military Science and Finance at Harvard (AB, 1944).  On February 8, 1944 he married Mary Soons, which he described as the best decision of his life.  Stuart served in the US Army in the 768 Field Artillery Battalion during World War II.  He completed an MBA at NYU Business School using the GI bill.

Stuart and Mary began their family life in northern NJ while Stuart worked at Manufacturers Hanover Bank in New York City.  In 1963, Stuart took a position as vice president of First City National Bank in Binghamton NY where he later became president and oversaw the design and building of their new headquarters. He served on the board of the Federal Reserve Bank of NY. In 1977, he moved to Rochester NY and served as president of Lincoln First Bank until retiring in 1980.

Stuart believed strongly in community service.  He lent his talents and quiet leadership to the National Mental Health Association (treasurer), Boy Scouts (Silver Beaver award in 1975), the United Way (leading campaigns), NY Forest Owners Association (treasurer and president), First Presbyterian Church of Pittsford (treasurer), the Finger Lakes Developmental Disabilities Service Office (making adaptive equipment for 28 years), and Pennybyrn at Maryfield (resident council member).

Stuart and Mary enjoyed travel, taking opportunities to learn about different parts of the world.  They spent their winters in the Florida Keys.  They shared a love of gardening and tennis.

Stuart is survived by his wife Mary of 73 years, and children: Stuart McCarty II (Lynn Thor), Martha Ann McCarty (Bo Fried), Jane Dunhill McCarty (Michael Bell) and Mary Croft McCarty (Lieselotte Zorn), four grandchildren (and partners), four great-grandchildren and four step-grandchildren, and one step-great-grandchild.  He was predeceased by his 3 older brothers (Von, Maclyn, and Bruce).

Stuart lived a life of integrity.  He led by example, demonstrating his values of community service, honesty and generous compassion in all of his activities.  His core values were:

Free your heart from hatred
Free your mind from worries
Live simply
Give more
Expect less

The essence of Stuart lives on in those whom he has left behind. He will be missed.

The family expresses deep appreciation to the loving and skilled caregiving team, who grew to respect and love this amazing man.  Thank you to Kelly, Michael, Tamara, Nikita, Shanna, Renee, Naomi, and Hospice of the Piedmont. You each brought humor and joy to Stuart.

Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to Maryfield Resident Care Fund (109 Penny Road, High Point, NC 27260).
