Samuel Walter Thompson, Sr., 85, of Thomasville, North Carolina passed away on June 22, 2026, at High Point Medical Center in High Point, North Carolina.
Samuel was born to the late Dewey Garfield and Betha Marie Asbury Thompson in Buchanan County, Virgina. He was one of five children. After graduating from high school, Samuel served in the U.S. Army for three years and then married, the love of his life, Linda Carol Collins. Samuel worked as a long distance truck driver all of his career.
Samuel loved his family, he was a devoted father, husband and friend. He was a man of strong and well rooted faith. He and Linda were members of Covenant Community Church. Samuel especially loved his grandchildren and great grandchildren who knew him as “Pawpaw Sam.” He taught them many things, even things that were frowned upon by “Grandma Linda,” including how to drive a go-cart, how to correctly throw a hatchet and how to use a machete. He loved telling jokes, picking and laughing with everyone. Most importantly, he was an example to all who knew him. His love for Christ and others, patience and kindness were characteristics of his very being.
Along with his parents, Samuel was preceded in death by; brothers, Lawrence Thompson and wife Kathleen, Fred Thompson and wife Sandra, Howard Thompson and wife Frances; sister, Elizabeth Thompson Mabe and husband John and grandson, Joshua Denmark.
Left to cherish Samuel’s memory are his wife of sixty-four years, Linda Collins Thompson; sons, Samuel “Sammy” Walter Thompson, Jr. and wife Leigh and Randall Eugene Thompson; daughter, Carol Marie Fancher and husband Derwin; grandchildren, Robert Thompson, Brandy Thompson, Stephen Thompson, SSgt Samuel Thompson, III, Nathan Combs and Brittany Purcell and husband AJ; great grandchildren, Robert Guthrie, Brandy Guthrie, Stephen Guthrie, Savannah Purcell, Hannah Purcell, and Alex Purcell; and several great-great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, June 29, 2026, at 11:00AM in the Wright Funeral Home, High Point Chapel with a visitation from 10:00AM until 11:00AM, one hour prior to the service at Wright Funeral and Cremation in High Point. A burial will be held on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at 2:30PM at Salisbury National Cemetery in Salisbury, North Carolina.
