Ruby Jean Worthington Land, 83, died in her home on December 26, 2023, with her loving husband by her side. She was born on August 9, 1940, in WV, the daughter of Jesse Worthington and Sadie Sanders Worthington Mitchell.
In 1962, Ruby, a young woman from the mountains of WV, moved to Baltimore where she met Carroll Land, a young man from Mississippi. The two married on October 6, 1962. For 61 years, 2 months, and 20 days, the couple dedicated themselves to caring for each other and raising their family.
Ruby was always present for her family, displaying her love and compassion during times of challenges and celebrations. She personified the values of love and kindness throughout her life and instilled these values into her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Outside of her family, she had a passion for working outdoors in her yard. She often said her peaceful place was working in her flower beds.
Ruby is predeceased by her father Jesse Worthington, her mother Sadie Sanders Worthington Mitchell, stepfather Paris Mitchell, eight brothers, her sister Louise Worthington Hess, and a beloved son-in-law, Leon Kolakowski.
Surviving, in addition to her husband, Carroll Land, are her son Kenneth Land, wife Merry; son Douglas Land, wife Loretta; daughter Sandra Land, husband Gary McNabb; daughter Marcie Kolakowski; granddaughters Jessica Thompson, Marie Land, Chasity Land, Olivia Williamson, Kristen Cranford, and Brianna McNabb; grandsons Keith Cranford, Isaac Land, and Paul McNabb; great grandchildren Noah Dobyns, McKenzie Czumaj, and Adalynn McNabb; brothers Raymond Worthington and Paul Mitchell, sister-in-law Louise Worthington; and many nieces and nephews.
The family extends deep appreciation to Ruby’s long time family primary care physician, Frank Everhart, PA for his understanding of Ruby’s privacy and modesty.
The family thanks Ruby’s doctors with Cone Health and the hospice nurses and aides. A special thank you to nurse Betty J. Ray for her compassionate care.
