Roma Elizabeth Shumaker Wittmann
Winston-Salem
Roma Elizabeth Shumaker Wittmann, 68, of Winston-Salem, formerly of San Diego, California, passed away Tuesday, March 13, 2018, at her home.
Born March 30, 1949, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, she was a daughter of the late Lester Shumaker and the late Roma Chapman Shumaker. Mrs. Wittmann was a retired accountant for the United States Marine Corp at MCAS MIRAMAR. She lived in Bakersfield, CA for some time before relocating to San Diego, CA. She met the Love of Her Life, Paul Wittmann (Class of 1965) as a sophomore at Clairemont High School. Upon Paul’s graduation, they did not see each other again until January of 1968 in La Jolla, CA while Roma was working for her father. After a whirlwind courtship, Paul proposed to Roma on her Birthday (March 30th) by presenting her with an engagement ring. A good high school friend, Bill Vigliotti, told Paul in a recent phone call that he remembers Paul saying, “I’m going to marry her one day.” They were married August 31, 1968, in Clairemont. In 1975 they moved to Vancouver, Canada to be near family and the great outdoors. In 1981, Roma gave birth to identical twin girls, Danielle Cherise and Jennifer Coryell. There are no other children (Roma said, “One pregnancy was enough.”)
She is survived by her husband, Paul Coryell Wittmann; daughters, Danielle Cherise Stapleton and husband Zach of CA, and Jennifer Coryell Fain and husband Nick of Winston-Salem; brothers, Richard Shumaker and wife Janelle, James (Bo) Shumaker, Jr., Kevin Shumaker, and Ian Shumaker; sister, Christine Davis and husband Jim.
Celebration of Life will be in San Diego, California at a later date.
