Richard "Dick" G. Shaler

Listen to Obituary

Richard Gibson “Dick” Shaler, 94, of High Point, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 14, 2025 at his home after several years of dementia. Born May 18, 1931, Pasadena, CA, he was the only son of the late Richard G. Shaler, Sr., and Dorothy Ball Shaler.

Dick graduated from the University of California, in Berkeley, CA with a degree in Architecture, and after a brief stint in private practice, went to work as the county architect for the Marin Civic Center, the seat of government for Marin County, California. The building is a sleek, modern landmark, and is considered one of the finest public buildings designed by the late architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Dick served in different capacities there from 1965 until retirement in 1995. He and his wife Jane moved to North Carolina in 1997 to enjoy their retirement in this beautiful area. They are both members of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in High Point, where Jane has served in various volunteer positions.

An avid restorer of British sports cars, Dick often commuted to work at the Civic Center in his 1948 MG TC with the top down, rain or shine! He was a charter member of the Abingdon Rough Riders, a group of classic MG owners who met monthly for drives in the San Francisco Bay area.

He is survived by his loving wife, Jane Gill-Shaler of the home; daughter Stacey Shaler Hill of Cobb, CA, her children Mandy Crume (Daniel) of Clever MO, Justin Hawkins (Diana) of Middletown CA, and Jesse Thoman (Paul) of McMinnville OR. He also leaves behind four stepdaughters, Dr. Julie Olmsted Cross and husband Dr. Matt Newville of Oak Park, IL, Janet Olmsted Cross, AIA of Wappingers Falls, NY; Katie Clay of St. Sauveur, France, and Anna Bower-Kemp (Paddy) of Lobethal, Australia.

Dick will be remembered by his family, friends, and devoted caregivers for his delightfully dry and gentle sense of humor, and for his many kindnesses to his family and friends.

An Inurnment service for Mr. Shaler will be held at 11:00 am on August 30, 2025, at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in High Point.

The family will greet friends in the Parish Hall following the service.
