Paul Leonard Cooper

Paul Leonard Cooper, 39, of Sophia, unexpectedly passed away Monday, September 9, 2024. Born September 19, 1984, in High Point, he was the son of Gary Wayne Cooper, Sr. and Susan McKnight Cooper, husband to Kelly Hooks Cooper, and father to Odyssey Elizabeth Cooper.

Foundational to Paul’s character was a strong, beautiful, service-oriented heart, driven by his strong faith in Jesus, with whom he maintained a daily conversation. He shared his faith with others in many ways, none more exemplary of his service than driving a church bus to ensure children in the community made their way to service and could be provided a good meal. He was often the constant presence when others were in need.

Among many passions, golf both drove and fulfilled Paul. Being on the course, playing in many tournaments, brought a joy to his life – as did the few times he beat his dad and brother in a round. It was through playing and the relationships fostered on the course which continued to fulfill his soul.

However, his greatest joy in life was his family, especially the love he shared with Kelly and Odyssey. Sweet Cheeks, Odyssey’s nickname, and Paul would share a special father/daughter handshake and a smile could never leave his face when he was in her presence.

Left to cherish his memory are: his loving, gracious high school sweetheart and wife, Kelly, and daughter Odyssey; his mom, Susan; dad Gary Sr. (Debbie); brother Gary Jr. (Kori, Tate, and Maddie); uncle Rodney; mother-in-law Ellen (James); sister-in-law Shelly (nephew Sincere); and nephew Stefan.

Preceding him in death were: Grandparents Rodney and Betty McKnight and Olivia Cooper.

The zoo holds a special place in Paul, Kelly, and Odyssey’s life. It brought a sense of peace in their lives. In lieu of flowers or gifts, Kelly is asking folks to consider donating to one of the two places that meant the most to them – The North Carolina Zoo Society or San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, September 13, 2024, in the Archdale Chapel of Wright Funerals-Cremations.

The family will receive friends following the service.
