Paul Alexander Atwell, Jr., 87, died November 19, 2016, after a brief illness.
He was born October 3, 1929, in Charlotte, NC, a son of Paul Alexander Atwell, Sr. and Bertha Vance Dickinson Atwell, who preceded him in death. In 1994, he married the former Rebecca Annette Welch.
Mr. Atwell was a student on football scholarship at the University of Richmond when he left to serve in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Although he lacked only two classes to graduate, he went to work after serving his country. Nearly 60 years later, Mr. Atwell returned to the classroom. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the Robins School of Business at the University of Richmond in 2007.He spent the majority of his career in the furniture industry with companies including Knob Creek, Ethan Allen, Hickory Manufacturing and Hickory White. He retired in 2004 as president of Ardley Hall.
Mr. Atwell played competitive tennis and ran numerous national marathons, including Boston. He enjoyed classical music and traveled throughout the world with his beloved wife, Rebecca. A lifelong scholar and athlete, he continued to audit college courses and play tennis well into his 80s. Friends and family cherished his quick wit, dry sense of humor and sartorial style. Mr. Atwell was a true Southern gentleman – gracious and kind.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Dr. Elizabeth Scott Atwell of Pierce, CO, and Victoria Atwell Sandiford of Chapel Hill, NC; five grandchildren; a niece, Alisha Atwell Boger of High Point, and other nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Dr. Wayne Beauford, Dr. Yogesh Bhusal, Dr. Maike Copeland, Dr. Paul Coughlin, Dr. Courage Emokpae, Dr. David Fisher, Dr. Tom Folk, Dr. Clanford Johnson, Dr. Alexander Lim, Rev. Brooks Johnson, and all the nurses and staff on 6 South at High Point Regional Hospital.
In accordance with his wishes, services will be private.
In lieu of food or flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the High Point Regional Health Foundation, P.O. Box HP-5, High Point, NC 27261.
