Patricia (Patsy) McArdle Shively, 89, of Winston-Salem passed away in the early morning hours of Saturday August 21, 2021 at Hospice Home at High Point, North Carolina. She was accompanied by her six surviving children in her last days of her earthly journey.
Patsy was born on April 13, 1932 in Malone, NY to the late William and Ruth Stewart McArdle. Her family moved to Tipperary Hill in Syracuse, NY when she was in the 3rd grade. She attended St. Patrick’s Catholic School through twelfth grade, where she graduated valedictorian of her class. After graduation, she attended a 2-year business school where she studied accounting and secretarial. She spent the next 12 years working as secretary at the Columbian National Life Ins. Co., Royal-Liverpool Ins. Group, and Eagan Real Estate in Syracuse, NY, and John Hancock in Boston, MA.
She moved to Rochester, NY where she worked at Xerox Corporation until she met and married her husband, Howard Shively (who preceded her in death). They were married for almost 50 years, most of which they lived in Rochester, NY. Those who knew Patsy know that she loved and valued her Catholic faith, family, friends and was always ready to have fun. She deeply appreciated beauty, nature, the arts, especially music, theatre and art museums. Yet, quality time with family and friends was highest on her list. Having grown up during the depression, she always had a soft heart for those in need, as she volunteered in soup kitchens and was ready to make a meal for a family who was grieving a loss.
Surviving are six children: Sr. Nancy Shively, OSC of Travelers Rest, SC; Karen Dewind of Jackson, TN; Sr. Elizabeth Therese Shively, OCD of Alhambra, CA; Edward (and Carolyn) Shively of Ballston Lake, NY; Nora Shively of Winston-Salem, NC; Peggy Culkin of Greensboro NC; and six grandchildren: Eddie (and Kelcie) Shively, Nicole Shively; Tommy Culkin, Maggie Culkin; Meg (Paul) McClung and Katherine (Jorge) Gomez; nine great grandchildren, Caleb, Holden and Walker McClung; Michael, Alexa, Christopher and Emily Gomez; Paityn and Parker Shively.
A Memorial Mass was celebrated at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church on Monday, August 23rd and the family is planning to gather again with friends and extended family in the Rochester-Syracuse area at a future date.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of the Piedmont or Hospice Home of High Point, NC.
Wright Funerals-Cremations is in charge of arrangements.
