Nancy Louise Beaver Spivey, age 80, died December 22, 2020, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center from complications of Covid-19.
She was born on August 30, 1940, to the late John W. Beaver and Louise Shell Beaver and was raised with her siblings, Wayne, Frank, and Patsy in the Elmwood community of Iredell County, NC. A dedicated student, she graduated with honors from Cool Springs High School and began a banking career with Merchant and Farmer’s Bank of Statesville (now Bank of America).
On September 27, 1969, she married Wayne Spivey of Albemarle, NC, and they shared 51 wonderful years together. In September of 1971, she became a stay-at-home mom until both of her daughters were in school. The family moved from Statesville to High Point, NC in 1980 where she and Wayne opened Pip Printing and worked together to build a very successful business until they retired in 2005.
A devoted Bridge player for many years, Nancy appreciated both the social and mental reward of the game and the many friends she met “across the table.” Nancy was undoubtedly the best card player that ever lived. Her family realizes that they should have taken her to Las Vegas. They would all be retired by now. Matching her devotion for playing bridge was her daily joy in reading the High Point and Statesville newspapers. Needless to say, she was always well-informed and never missed a detail. When gathering with family and friends, Nancy regularly turned those gatherings into a celebration by providing delicious food and gracious hospitality. The Nancy Spivey snack trays are legendary.
Through the years Nancy was active in her church, her daughters’ activities, and befriending senior citizens. She remained close to classmates and Statesville friends through the years, always looking forward to their “get-togethers.” She enjoyed traveling with Wayne, especially on getaways to the mountains of NC.
She and Wayne were blessed with a wonderful family. Her children and grandchildren were her pride and joy, and she delighted in all their adventures. Her children are Emily Spivey Philbrook, married to Scott, and Rev. Amy Spivey Moore, married to Tim. She has a granddaughter, Laura-Clare Moore, and a grandson, Rowan Philbrook, who were the loves of her life. She could never say “no” to them. She was known—without apology—to fix them milkshakes and floats for breakfast. They adored their “Kissie” and will miss her every day.
In addition to her husband, children, and their families, Nancy is survived by her brother, Professor Frank Beaver, of Ann Arbor, MI, all her dear nieces and nephews, and Doris P. Bowles who was like a sister to her.
Nancy’s family extends their infinite gratitude to the nurses, doctors, and hospital staff at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center who went above and beyond for her. They are truly angels on Earth.
The family will honor her memory with a private family inurnment at First United Methodist Church in High Point. A celebration of Nancy’s life will be scheduled at a later date in 2021.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Monticello United Methodist Church, 308 Island Ford Road, Statesville, NC 28625 or First United Methodist Church, 512 North Main Street, High Point, NC 27265.
