Marlene Newton Cannon, 83, a lifelong resident of the High Point area, passed away August 24, 2020, after a long battle with kidney disease and cancer. A daughter of Charles and Lillian Newton, she was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Bill and Gary Dale, her sister Patricia and her grandson Evan. She is survived by her sons Rick (Doug) and Jeff Gibbons (Debbie) and grandson Graham (Amber). She is also survived by her brothers Jimmy and Allen Newton and her sister Linda South.
Marlene was employed as the IT manager for Binnings Building Products in Lexington, a division of National Gypsum. In her career, she travelled to all the National Gypsum locations for software and programming training purposes.
Marlene was a faithful member of Pilot View Baptist Church where she served as the organist for over 50 years. She also served as the church treasurer after her retirement. One of her greatest joys was the fellowship with her church family, especially at church dinners and homecoming. Her chicken and dumplings, Jalapeno Kraut and baked ham are legendary. But her specialty was her six-layer Swiss Chocolate cake, a standard at family birthdays.
The family will have a private inurnment. A celebration of life service will be scheduled at Pilot View at a later date.
