Margaret Elizabeth Hege Wood, 92, of High Point, passed away from this world to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, July 5, 2024.
She was born July 17, 1931, to Manie Garland Hege and Clemmie Berrier Hege on a farm in Davidson County, where she grew up. The second youngest of eight children, she spent many days working in the fields, which she did not particularly enjoy. Margaret loved reading novels, newspapers, biographies, her Bible, and maybe a sideways glance at the tabloids at the check-out line. She loved learning about the stories of people’s lives. Margaret said she read every book in her school’s library. She wrote for her high school’s newspaper and was voted most dignified. After high school, she graduated from Ashmore Business School in Thomasville
In 1955, she married Bill Wood and moved to High Point. They were married 56 years and had a daughter, Amy Jo, in 1961. She was a member of Green Street Baptist Church all her adult life. She taught a kindergarten Sunday School class for many years and was a faithful member of Hilda Neil’s Sunday School class, and then Gloria Kennett’s class. Margaret loved the music of Green Street especially when the choir sang the Halleluiah Chorus at Christmas and Easter.
She worked at the Guilford County Outpatient Clinic for 30 years and relished her role of assisting the director Dr. Eldora Terrell, all the nurses, and patients who visited the clinic.
In her retirement, she enjoyed traveling. Nearly every Saturday for more than 25 years, she and her daughter, made a day of exploring restaurants, bakeries, boutiques, gift shops, galleries, historic sites, and farmer’s markets across the state. She also enjoyed their many weekend getaways to places such as Hendersonville, Edenton, Beaufort, NC and Beaufort, SC where they visited one of their favorite author's Literary Center and grave site – Pat Conroy.
In addition to her husband Bill Wood, she was predeceased by all her sisters and brothers, Leople Parrish, Rebecca Hotle, Carrie Mae Lambeth, Beulah Childress, Versie Lee Hege, Olin J. Hege, and Harvey Eugene Hege.
The family would like to thank the following people for going above and beyond during Margaret’s last months, Donna Orman, niece; Cheryle Parrish, niece; Dot Byerly and Tammy Blevins cousins, Amber Fitzgerald, long-time companion; and Barbara Parris Springs, special family friend.
They also appreciate the extraordinary Med Techs and CNA’s at Westchester Harbour. Holly and the entire Hospice team is appreciated as well.
Left to cherish her memory is her devoted daughter, Amy Jo Wood Pasquini and husband John. No one could ever miss her more.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Tuesday, July 9, 2024, in the High Point Chapel of Wright Funerals-Cremations. Burial will follow in Floral Garden Park.
