Dr. Leslie Charles

Leslie Charles, MD, of Washington, DC peacefully departed this life on January 3, 2021 in Greensboro, NC.

Dr. Charles, 85, migrated to the United States from Trinidad and Tobago, West Indies, to attend Howard University in Washington, DC in 1956, earning a Bachelor's of Science in Chemistry and Pre-Medicine studies in 1960. In 1964, he graduated from Meharry Medical School and subsequently completed an internship and residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology. He resided in Washington, DC his entire life, with frequent leisure, business, and pro-bono, medically-oriented travels and sabbaticals throughout the West Indies and North America. He spent the last ten years with his son, Wayne, in Greensboro, NC.

Leslie is preceded in death by his loving parents Mohammed Charles and Rose Soogrim Charles, and his former wife, Shirley Louise Smith Charles. Leslie is survived by four children L. Derek (Pamela), Lisa Cynthia Charles Lewis (David), Robert Dwayne (Christine), and Wayne Christopher. He is also mourned by four precious grandchildren, Rachel Christine, Dallas Amanda, Robert Dwayne II, and Halston Christopher Charles. Leslie leaves 5 surviving siblings: Phillis Hosein, Lenora Karmody, Hamid Charles (Gloria), Charmaine Charles and Lydia Charles. He is predeceased by 3 siblings: Errol Charles, Merven Charles, Gloria Karamath.

A private, family celebration of life will be held for Dr. Charles in Washington, DC.
