Keith Akers Hutchens, born September 7, 1946, passed away peacefully at High Point Hospice on January 2, 2026, at the age of 79.
Keith was the son of Banner Dennis Hutchens and Pauline Cagle Hutchens, who preceded him in death. He graduated from High Point Central High School in 1964 and continued his education at Campbell College and High Point College. Keith devoted 35 years of loyal service to Belk Department Store, retiring in 2001. Never one to slow down, he later worked part-time for the City of High Point at Oak Hollow Golf Course for 13 years, combining work with his love of the game.
Sports were a lifelong passion for Keith. Whether playing, coaching, or cheering from the sidelines, he loved it all. In the 1970s and 1980s, he was an avid bowler and proudly served as president of the High Point Bowling Association. One of his favorite accomplishments was narrowly missing a perfect bowling score by rolling a 299. He was so proud of that moment that he had a custom license plate made for his car that read HUTCH299, a detail that perfectly captured his competitive spirit and sense of humor.
After retiring, Keith dedicated even more time to golf. He served several years on the Board of Directors of the High Point Senior Golf Association, including as Chairman in 2013 and 2014. In his later years, one of his greatest joys was watching his grandson Colby compete in golf tournaments.
Above all else, Keith cherished his family. He was married to his beloved wife, Janet, for 56 years. Together, they shared a love of travel, especially cruising, enjoying 19 cruises together over the years. He was a proud father and a deeply loving grandfather who treasured time spent with his three grandchildren. Whether cheering them on, sharing stories, or simply being present, those moments meant everything to him.
Keith is survived by his wife, Janet; his son, Chris; daughter-in-law, Sandy; grandchildren Gracie, Maggie and Colby; along with many extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly.
Keith also had a deep love for animals, especially his cat, who brought him comfort and companionship. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to local animal shelters in his memory.
In keeping with Keith’s love of sports and his easygoing spirit, the family hopes his service will feel like a celebration rather than a stiff, formal occasion. Guests are welcome to wear their favorite lucky golf shirt or the colors of their favorite team—just know that Keith would probably have had a few words for anyone showing up in support of a team other than the UNC Tar Heels.
Memorial Service will be 11:00AM Saturday, January 10, 2026, in the Wright Funerals-Cremations, High Point Chapel.
The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.
Wright Funerals-Cremations, High Point, is in charge of the arrangements.
