Mrs. Joyce Gene Thomas Welborn (90) passed away on Monday, May 16, 2016.
Mrs. Welborn was born in High Point, North Carolina on March 18, 1926 to John Merrimon and Bernice Marsh Thomas. She had two sisters, Waneta Riggins and Nona Briles, and one brother, Jay M. Thomas. All her siblings preceded her in death.
Joyce (Thomas) Welborn graduated from Allen Jay High School in 1943. She excelled in basketball, Glee Club, and was inducted in the Beta Club. She worked at the U.S. Navy Induction Center in High Point during WWII. Following the war, she married returning veteran Robert Leonard Welborn of Trinity, a Pearl Harbor survivor. They were married on April 20, 1946, and remained happily married for nearly 62 years until his death in 2008. Mrs. Welborn resided in Trinity all of her adult life, until moving to Piedmont Crossing Nursing Home in Thomasville in June 2015. Mrs. Welborn became a full time Mother and homemaker in 1946.
Together the Welborns reared four children; Robert (Bob), born in 1948; Stephen (Steve), born in 1951, Kenneth (Ken), born in 1953, and Mary Jane (Mary), born in 1958. All survive today, and have produced 15 grand children and 8 great grand children. Mrs. Welborn was a great Mother who said publicly and often, “Raising my children is the greatest thing I could have done with my life— such a blessing!”
Mrs. Welborn became a committed follower of Christ at age 12, serving as Sunday School teacher, Woman’s Missionary Union Director, Vacation Bible School Director, Pianist and Organist for Trinity Baptist Church over the course of 50 + years. She always enjoyed serving others, giving selflessly of her time and talents to her church and community, as well as her family and friends. She served in leadership positions in the Trinity Schools PTA, and served as a substitute teacher. She was a founding member of the Sunset Garden Club of Archdale - Trinity, serving in various leadership positions.
A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted at 2:00 PM Saturday, May 21, 2016 at Trinity Baptist Church, on NC Hwy 62 in Trinity. The Rev. Morris Little and Rev. Kenneth Welborn officiating. The family will gladly receive friends and family in the church Fellowship Hall immediately following the service. A private family interment ceremony will be held at Hopewell United Methodist Church in Trinity.
