Joseph W. Hanes, 81, of Gastonia, passed away Monday, December 26, 2022, at his home.
Saying goodbye to this wonderful man is one of the hardest things we’ll ever do. A proud graduate of the Air Force Academy’s 5th graduating class in 1963, Joe flew countless C-130 missions throughout Asia in support of the Vietnam Conflict. After 7 years of active duty service, he continued flying as a reserve pilot, flying the C-123 with a unit in Pittsburgh, as an employee with TransWorld Airlines, an instructor pilot for the Federal Aviation Administration and an owner/operator for an executive aircraft charter service. When airlines struggled in the late 70s and early 80s, he flexed into real estate, but later returned to flying with Piedmont where he met the love of his life, Donna. He retired from US Airways in 2000. Joe has been the anchor of our family and the center of Donna’s universe for the last thirty-five years, and she is so grateful he chose her to be his constant companion. The love, time and attention he generously shared with all of us improved our lives in so many ways. Our collective memories of him as a teacher, mentor, devoted husband, brother and friend will lift Donna and the rest of the family up in the coming weeks and months. Thank you for your prayers and messages of support and appreciation to Joe in his final days; they meant the world to him.
At Joe's request, no services will be held.
