He went through boot camp at Camp Lejeune NC then in 1969 he completed his MOS training at Camp Pendleton, CA to be a track vehicle repairman. He earned his GED in 1970 and in 1971 he returned to Camp Pendleton to attend Turrent Repair School. John was assigned to HQ Btry, 4th BN, 10th Marines, 2nd Marine DIV FMF. He served 4 years in the Corps achieving the rank of Sergeant, during which he spent 14 months overseas in Okinawa. SGT. Before his honorable discharge from the USMC, he married his 1st wife Patricia Ann Palmer in 1972 and they had a daughter Charissa “Crissy” Dawn in March of 1973.

Following his marriage he also served in The United States Army National Guard in the Service Btry, 4th BN 113th FA from January 4th, 1974, until his honorable discharge on February 13th, 1987. John was a true patriot, proud to have served and proud of his family members both past and present that served and currently serve. John loved music and playing his Bass Guitar. He taught his daughter Crissy to play at the age of 13, and later his granddaughter Tiffany and then his grandson Kendall, teaching them all the same first song “Stand By Me”. He enjoyed playing Bass with his grandson Kendall at home and playing at church with both Kendall on Drums and Tiffany on Saxophone in the music ministry. John was a member of Unity Wesleyan Church of Trinity although his health had kept him from attending for some time.

He loved being a grandfather and great grandfather and treasured all those special visits with the littles. He kept their names and birthdays on the fridge so he would never forget them. One of his favorite shirts proudly boasted of his role as a papaw. He loved his sweet tea and was the best maker of red eye gravy. He was a Duke Blue Devils basketball Fan through and through and spending time watching the games was a favorite way to spend time with Tammy.

John’s beloved wife Tammy will always keep her John Boy in her heart. John will always be remembered as the baby brother, also known as brother John by his sister. His nieces and nephews will never forget their Uncle Johnny. He was the best father a girl could ask for, and his daughter’s heart will forever miss her dad, her original and #1 hero. John’s grandson Kendall will always treasure the years he spent living with John, being raised and loved like a son, even though he didn’t have to. His grandchildren and great- grandchildren will always remember their Papaw for his competitive back yard badminton games, his finger “nubs” that liked to pinch them and was always eager to get down in the floor and play with them with hot wheels or whatever they desired. All who know John will miss him dearly.
