John Elliott Mauney

John Elliott Mauney, 85, of High Point, passed away Tuesday, July 14, 2020, at Grand Strand Medical Center, in Myrtle Beach, SC.

Born September 24, 1934, in Lincoln County, he was a son of the late John Wallace Mauney and the late Mary Lou Coffey Mauney. John grew up on a farm, one of three kids, including an identical twin, Jim. He came from a family that loved music, something that would shape John's entire life. Upon graduating high school, John and his twin brother joined the Army, where they served in the Korean theater as part of a military marching band. Once they finished their tour, the brothers completed their graduate work at Appalachian State University, where they earned their Master's in music education. He was capable of playing nearly every instrument he picked up, and that made John a favorite of his professors.

John began his career as a schoolteacher, and he started the very first marching band at Ledford High School. It was the beginning of an award-winning, legendary marching band. John was incredibly gifted, and this was especially evident in the work he did with his students. All of the performances his students did were written and choreographed by him. A lifelong teacher, John continued to teach music lessons after he retired in 1993. In 2018, John was honored by the students at Ledford High School when an award was created in his name. Given each fall, the John Mauney award goes to the visiting school that wins the Ledford Band Competition.

John enjoyed traveling, playing cards with friends, watching college basketball, and taking trips with his wife, Carolyn, to their favorite place Myrtle Beach.

He is survived by his wife Carolyn Byerly Mauney of the home, son, Joel Mauney (Linda) of Broomfield, Colorado; daughter, Jennifer Mauney (April) of Greensboro; step-daughters, Karen Redmon (Steve) of Greensboro, Shannon Everhart (Sandy) of Thomasville, Jennifer Lee (David) of Greenville; brother, Steve Mauney (Lynda) of Wilmington; grandchildren, McKenna Mauney, Davis Mauney; six step-grandchildren; five step great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Jim Mauney.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM Sunday, July 19, 2020, in the chapel of Wright Funerals-Cremations with Jim Groome officiating with burial at Floral Garden Park.

The family will visit with friends from 1:00 PM until 1:45 PM prior to the service at the funeral home.
