Born on July 10, 1938, in Catawba County, he was the son of the late John Marlin Brumley Sr. and Sara Setzer Brumley, former owner-operators of the old Belk-Brumley store in Newton.

John loved Wolfpack basketball and football, hunting, photography, music, storytelling, family vacations to Nags Head, and dancing--even in memory care, with the help of his Rollator. He is remembered for his friendly and outgoing nature, his big laugh, his love of grilling, and his harmonica playing.
A loving father, John supported his children in their interests and activities and raised them in Lincolnton and Asheboro in the Lutheran church.
