Janet Hazledine Benner
High Point
Janet Mae Hazledine Benner, 79, of High Point, died Tuesday, February 13, 2018, at Hospice Home at High Point.
Born September 27, 1938, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, she was the daughter of the late Laverne Hazledine and the late Irene Goulet Hazledine.
Jan attended The Church of the Resurrection Catholic School; St. Margaret’s Academy and the University of Minnesota. She married her husband, Stanley “Dave” David Benner, in 1962 and they made their home in south Minneapolis. Jan raised her three children there and was an active member of The Church of the Resurrection. She counted among her greatest blessings, her very special group of friends that formed the Sunday night “Prayer Group.”
After her husband passed away, Jan relocated to High Point, NC in 1996 where she became an active member of her beloved Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. She was a member of the Bethany Society, the Comfort Weavers, the Holy Hats of High Point, IHM Interfaith Hospitality Network, RCIA and the “Panera Coffee group.” Jan also treasured her years as a Travel Consultant at AAA Travel in High Point.
Jan was an accomplished seamstress, quilter, crafter, and pianist. She enjoyed outdoor adventure and was an avid camper and canoer. Jan loved music! If there was a summer concert in the park, she was there. She loved musical theater and became a board member and dear friend of the “Friends of the Theater for the City of High Point” and was named Volunteer of the Year in 2011.
Jan will be remembered for her beautiful smile, inviting laugh, and indomitable spirit. She was a hero to many.
Jan is survived by her son, Bruce Benner and fiancée Rene Lynne Mills of Alaska; daughter, Sarah Williford and husband Bob of Asheville; grandchildren, Kristin Williford, Joshua Williford, Levi Benner and Lia Benner; dear friend Don Barrett; many relatives and close friends; and caregivers, Maggie Ray and Shannon Griffin.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley David Benner; son, Paul Benner; and brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Lucille Hazledine.
A memorial mass will be conducted at 11:00 AM Thursday, February 22, 2018, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Fr. Joseph C. Zuschmidt, O.S.F.S., and Fr. Tom Norris, O.S.F.S. officiating.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until 10:45 AM prior to the mass at the church.
