James Calvert Michaels Jr. “Mike”, 89, of High Point, went to be with our Lord after a brief struggle with cancer at Hospice Home at High Point July 27, 2017.

Mike was born in Kings Mountain, NC on January 31, 1928. Immediately following his graduation from High Point Central High School in 1948, he enlisted in the United States Navy. Mike served his first 18 months in Guam. He was then given a 30 day leave in which he returned to High Point to propose to his high school sweetheart, Faye Nell Cole. He was then stationed in Japan for the following year. Mike was honorably discharged from the Navy as a Yeoman 3rd Class in June of 1952 and on July 26, 1952 he was finally able to marry the love of his life…Faye Nell Cole Michaels. Mike then graduated from barber school in Winston-Salem and became owner/operator of Mike’s Barber shop in High Point. He went on to later retire from Lily Industries in 1990. Mike was an active member of Green Street Baptist Church where he was a member of the Saints Alive Choir, the Sunshine Fellowship Club and Jerry Poole & Jim Rasberry’s Sunday School Class. He loved working in the yard, was an avid walker, an involved grandfather, loving father and devoted husband. His gentle spirit and quick wit touched many lives everywhere he went.

Mike leaves behind his wife of 65 years, Faye Cole Michaels, his son Richard (Julia) Michaels and one grandson James Lee Michaels.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James Calvert and Evelyn Crowell Michaels and one sister Helen Tuttle, all of High Point.

A memorial service will be held at Green Street Baptist Church by Reverend Phil Rhynerson at 2:00 on Saturday, August 5, 2017. Visitation will follow immediately thereafter.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Green Street Baptist Church Building Fund or the Hospice Home of the Piedmont.
