James "Bo" Hunter Morgan

James Hunter "Bo" Morgan passed away peacefully on December 25, 2024, after a four-year battle with a chronic illness. Born on April 6, 1938, in Washington, PA, Bo was the son of Dr. Arthur E. Morgan and Mrs. Frances Mauney Morgan (Frances Morgan Fraser).

Bo graduated from Fayetteville High School, earned his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina, and a master’s degree in Recreation Sociology from the University of Illinois. After three years of Army service, he began a career in Parks and Recreation, working in Maryland and Columbia, SC.

In 1973, Bo moved to High Point, NC, where he became Director of Parks and Recreation in 1976. An innovative leader, Bo created the Oak Hollow Yacht Club, introduced disc golf, and oversaw projects such as the High Point Greenway, tennis center, athletic complex, and Roy B. Culler Senior Center. He was driven by a desire to improve and enrich the community.

After retiring from the city, Bo worked as a real estate appraiser and expanded his hobbies to include golf with the Triad Super Seniors, model railroading, and serving on community boards.

A devoted member of High Point’s First Presbyterian Church, Bo served as a deacon, elder, Sunday School teacher, and youth advisor. He also participated in NC Presbyterian Pilgrimage retreats, mission trips, and led the Interfaith Hospitality Network to support homeless families. His greatest joy, however, was spending time with his granddaughters.

On September 9, 1961, Bo married his college sweetheart, Carolyn Nifong Morgan, who survives him. He is also survived by his son, David Zan Morgan (Carey); his daughter, Melissa Morgan Tatum (Paul); granddaughters Morgan “Bree” and Sophie Tatum; sister Mary Morgan; and brothers John “Chip” Morgan (Nancy) and William “Zeke” Morgan.

A service of Remembrance and Thanksgiving will be held on Saturday, January 4, 2025, at 2:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church in High Point.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Presbyterian Church or a charity of your choice.
