James “Jimmy” Gilbert Carroll
High Point, NC
James “Jimmy” Gilbert Carroll passed away at Hospice Home at High Point, North Carolina on September 23, 2018.
He was born on September 30, 1955, in Danville, Virginia to Eugene Edgar Carroll, Jr. and Mary Ruth Gilbert Carroll. He was raised in Caswell County and Raleigh, North Carolina, graduating from Millbrook High School in 1973 in Raleigh and from North Carolina State University in 1978. At NC State he worked on the university newspaper, The Technician, and later became the Technician Sports Editor. He moved to High Point in 1978 and began writing for the Sports Department of the High Point Enterprise covering High Point University sports and the ACC. He later became editor of the Lifestyles section and a page designer. He retired in 2012. Highlights from his career include covering the ACC football beat and the College World Series; and interviewing Mickey Mantle. A lifelong State fan, his favorite things were attending State football games with his son, NC State basketball, NY Yankees baseball, and being a distant relative of Andy Griffith. He attended Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church and the Covenant Sunday School Class. In 1983 he married Frances Anne Dalton in Greensboro, North Carolina. During his lifetime Jimmy raised thousands of dollars for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. In 2001 he received a double lung transplant at Duke University Medical Center.
In addition to his parents, Jimmy was predeceased by an infant sister, Gloria Jean Carroll. He is survived by his wife, Anne; his son, Clay; and his brother, Eugene Edgar Carroll, III (Hope Harold); and many beloved aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service will be held in the sanctuary of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, 1225 Chestnut Drive in High Point at 1 PM on Friday, September 28, 2018, with visitation in the Asbury Room after the service.
