Mr. William Herbert Martin Tucker, Sr. of Greensboro, passed away Monday, May 21, 2018, at Beacon Place Hospice.
Memorial services celebrating the life of Mr. Tucker will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, June 2, 2018, at Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Greensboro with Reverend Joshua Haugen and Reverend John Fair officiating. The family will greet friends following the service at the church.
Mr. Tucker was a native of Greensboro and was a son of the late Julius Herbert Tucker and the late Virginia Loman Tucker. He graduated from Rankin High School and studied both at Guilford College and the University of Virginia. He was a self-taught historian and was a member of Ebenezer Lutheran Church where he served as an Elder. Mr. Tucker also served Buffalo Presbyterian Church in several capacities, including Elder, Historian, Chairman of the Board of Trustees and Cemetery Trustee. He was happy to have guided Buffalo Church in gaining the following designations: National Register of Historic Sites (for the cemetery and church); State and Denominational Registers; and the Guilford County Landmark Designation (for the church and cemetery).
Mr. Tucker was devoted to his family and his Christian beliefs. He also enjoyed 18th Century landscaping, period antiques and reproductions, and genealogy. His lifelong role model was Robert E. Lee.
Mr. Tucker was a charter member of several genealogical societies and preservation groups. He was associated by ancestry with the Descendants of the Mayflower; the Pilgrim John Howland Society; the Descendants of the Jamestown Colony; Sons of the Revolution; Sons of the American Revolution; Descendants of the War of 1812 and Mexican War; Sons of Confederate Veterans; the Military Order of the Stars and Bars (Descendants of the Confederate Officer's Corp.); and Descendants of Spanish American War Veterans. He was retired from employment with Winchester Surgical/Physicians Sales and Service of Charlotte.
Mr. Tucker is survived by his devoted wife, Jennie Dodson Tucker, of the home; daughters, Elizabeth V. Tucker Keene and husband Brennen of Chester, VA; Anne L. Tucker Brittle and husband Marshall of Jacksonville, FL; and Meredith J. Tucker Williams and husband Markham Erickson of Arlington, VA; sons, William H. M. Tucker, Jr. of Greensboro, and George Eric Tucker Williams and wife Julie of Churchville, VA; grandchildren, Rachel Keene, Emeline Keene, William Keene, Jack Jenkins, John Williams, Ella Williams, Caroline Melmed, Henry Erickson, Sarah Erickson, and Josselin Niberon Tucker; brother, J. Martin Tucker of Winston-Salem.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made in honor of Mr. Tucker to Ebenezer Lutheran Church 310 S. Tremont Dr., Greensboro, NC 27403, or Buffalo Presbyterian Church Cemetery Fund 803 16th St., Greensboro, NC 27405.
