Herb was born December 30, 1946, in Washington, PA, the son of the late Herbert L. Riggs Sr. and Gertrude Wilber Riggs. A true farm boy, he worked hard daily with his parents. Without much time to play or socialize growing up, without any regrets, Herb developed a strong work ethic.
Herb was a 1964 graduate of Burgettstown High School along with his childhood sweetheart, Jane. The two married July 29, 1966, and started their adventures together. Herb and Jane moved too many times to count but were always steadfast in their love and commitment to each other. Never one before the other, “Always Together”, side by side.
After High School, Herb worked at Weirton Steel for 21 years as a Rigger, Maintenance Planner and Mechanical General Foreman. Upon moving to Florence, SC, he went to work at Nucor Steel. While at Nucor, he started Noah Builders Inc, a Residential Building Business, along with owning multiple flower/gift shops with Jane.
At 49 years of age, Herb was diagnosed with Bladder Cancer and doctors gave him a 4% chance of survival. God proved doctors wrong, as He had different plans for Herb and Jane. They both committed their lives for God’s Glory.
Herb and Jane went into Missionary work and traveled extensively in Central America, building homes and teaching and preaching the gospel, living in Nicaragua for several years. It was there that they met Maria and Jarred, who immediately became the daughter and son they never had. Maria and Jarred returned to the states with them and settled in NC. Maria and her husband Steven blessed them with three grandchildren, that completed their family.
Herb was preceded in death by Jane (2022), his father, Herbert (1994) and mother, Gertrude (2020), his brother Richard (2019) and niece Raine’ (2019). He is survived by his son, Jarred, daughter, Maria Dooley (Steven) and grandchildren, Elena, Carson & Scarlett and his sister, Darlene Kuhn (Donald) along with many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
A Gathering of family and friends will be held at 6:30 PM Thursday, May 2, 2024, at Community Bible Church.
Wright Funerals-Cremations, High Point, is assisting the family.
