Mrs. Hazel Lee Asbill Bowen passed away in her home Saturday morning, February 3, 2024, in the presence of her children. She was 96. Born December 3, 1927, in High Point, she was the eldest of four children born to the late William Lee and Rosa Owen Asbill. She graduated from High Point Central High School and magna cum laude from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a Bachelor of Science, December 13, 1978.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Howard Gibson “Buddy” Bowen and son, Howard Gibson “Gibbie” Bowen, Jr., her sister, Zelma Blackburn, and brother, Quay Asbill.
She is survived by her sister, Rosa Staley; daughter, Roma Angel (John), of High Point and son, Gary Bowen (Natasha) of Randleman; two grandchildren, Julie Jordan Joyce Harris (Mike Few) and Isabella Bowen; two great-grandchildren, Maren Harris and Harper Harris, of High Point.
Hazel taught mathematics at Southwest Guilford High School for ten years. She was active in the Furniture City Women’s Club, serving as president; a member of the Senior Center Happy Tones Choir; historian for High Point High School class of 1938/39. In addition, she was active in the Oak View Baptist Church “GO GO Girls,” a women’s fellowship group, and the Emerywood Baptist Church lady’s class.
She traveled widely in the US and abroad and participated in the North Carolina Center for International Understanding programs. She was instrumental in founding the Howard Gibson “Gibbie” Bowen Scholarship for a graduating senior at High Point Central High School.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 2:00 PM Saturday, February 10, 2024, in the High Point Chapel of Wright Funerals-Cremations. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM-1:45 PM prior to the service.
Burial will be private at Floral Garden Memorial Park
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of the Piedmont, 1801 Westchester Drive, High Point, NC 27262 or to the National MS Society, PO Box 91891, Washington, DC 20090-1891.
