Gertie (Pennix) Key

“When we all get to heaven, what a day of rejoicing that will be” …Our precious and strong Gertie Pennix Key, known as “Granny” to most, quietly and peacefully met Jesus in her home and was made whole on January 14, 2024.

My mother was a prayer warrior, lover of people and a force to be reckoned with most days. Her strength through the trials and difficulties as a mother and wife made her the person we so admire. Her faithfulness, joy for life and laughter will be missed.

Mother was born on June 20th, 1927, the daughter of John Winfield Pennix & Etta Estelle Pennix.  She grew up in Mt. Airy and married Wayne Hampton Key on July 23, 1946. She faithfully cared for him until his death in 1986.

My mother moved to High Point to be close to us in 2002. She was active with the Sunshine Fellowship group at GSBC, always cooking for us, on the go with friends, shopping & so enjoyed our family beach trips. She was a passionate prayer warrior and we treasured her daily prayers for us.

She was a devoted mother to Sandra (Jerry) Key Groce, and loving grandmother (Granny) to Angela (Matthew) Tripp, Amber Groce, and Ashley (Michael) Kirk. Granny was enamored by her great-grandchildren as well; Brennen Tripp, Natalie Tripp, Hampton Tripp, Wynn Groce, Logan Kirk, Noah Kirk and Hudson Kirk. My mother is survived by her sister, Patricia Younger and preceded in death by three brothers; Wade, Harry and Roy Pennix and two sisters, Margie Hicks & Mary Taylor.

Our family appreciates all the love and support we have received over the last few weeks. My mother was truly a Proverbs 31 woman and it has been an honor to care for her as she did for my dad for many years.

Heaven celebrates her entrance into her forever home and likewise we will celebrate her life at Green Street Baptist Church on Thursday January 18, 2024, at 11:00 AM.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM – 10:45 AM before the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Green Street Baptist Church, Piedmont Hospice or Samaritan’s Purse.

Wright Funerals-Cremations, High Point is in charge of arrangements.
