Gary Vergis Damron

Gary Vergis Damron, 77, of Sophia, passed away Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at his home.

Born October 26, 1948, in Pike County, he was a son of the late Vergis Damron and the late Allene Bennett Damron. Gary worked at Klaussner and Carson’s for many years. His interests and hobbies were fishing, riding four wheelers, hunting, beekeeping, camping and gardening. He loved the outdoors.

Gary’s favorite thing to do was to spend time with his family. He enjoyed their big gatherings on New Year’s, Easter, Fourth of July, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. He looked forward to the annual family camping trips to the mountains on Memorial Day and Labor Day.

He had a pleasant personality. Gary made friends easily and never met a stranger. He liked to help others in any way he could. A hard worker, he planted a garden each spring, not just for himself but to share vegetables with family and friends. He had many friends including Randy, Ronald and Billy. Gary’s best friend was his dog, Buddy. Buddy was Gary’s shadow. Where Gary went, Buddy went too. Buddy will greatly miss his “Daddy” like the rest of us.

He is survived by his wife, Jennie Damron of the home; sisters, Jeanettia Morrison (Don), JoAnne McMickle, Martha Beshears (Steve) and Karen Taylor (Tim); brothers, Grover Damron (Libby) and Gerald Damron; 10 nieces, 10 nephews, 9 great nieces and 18 great nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Joyce Damron and Freda Miller.

Memorial service will be 5:00 PM Tuesday, April 7, 2026, at Trindale Baptist Church with Pastor Tony Moore officiating.

Memorials may be directed to Samaritan’s Purse or a charity of choice.
