Freeman Asbury Barker, 84, left his earthly body for his Heavenly home, Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at Hospice Home in High Point.

He was born June 10, 1932, in Jackson County, a son of the late John Ottis Barker and the late Virginia Hanon Barker. In 1952 he was drafted by the Army, and spent two years serving in Korea. After twenty-three years in furniture manufacturing, he retired from Lea Industries. On the weekends, he could be found peddling his wares at flea markets around Western North Carolina. In his younger years, he was an avid small game hunter, and a lifelong gardener. Freeman was a lover of sports, and if a score was kept you could find him watching with excitement and rooting for the underdog, though he lived for NASCAR and football seasons. He was a teller of tall tales and silly jokes and a friend to all.

Freeman is survived by his daughter, Virginia “Gennie” Childers of Union, SC; son, Joey Barker and wife Sarah Barker of High Point; brother, Mark Barker of Sylva, NC; sister, Clara Belle Martin of Union, SC; grandchildren, Charity Barker, DJ Warren and Daniel Childers; great-grandchildren, Aregus “Bam”, Ja'Kobe and Skylar; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Howell Barker; his daughter Mary “Anita” Grace Warren; brothers, Don, Dewey and Doyle Barker.

A celebration of life service will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday, October 9, 2016 at Old Savannah Baptist Church in Sylva, NC.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM until 3:00 PM prior to the service at the church.
