Dr. Neal Sheffield, Jr.

Dr. Neal Sheffield, Jr., DDS (93) of Colfax, NC died February 20, 2026, at Cone Hospital in Greensboro. His life will be celebrated at a memorial service at River Landing at Sandy Ridge, 1575 John Knox Drive, Colfax, NC at 3:00 pm on Saturday, April 11, 2026.

A native of Greensboro, he was born on April 9, 1932, to Neal and Louise Sheffield. He graduated from Greensboro Senior High (now Grimsley Senior High) and UNC-Chapel Hill and from the UNC School of Dentistry.

After two years in the Army at Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD, he returned to Greensboro and opened his dental practice in 1958. Ten years later he attended Columbia University in New York City for a residency in Orthodontics, after which he had offices in Greensboro and Kernersville.

Often referred to as a Renaissance Man, he was an avid learner – a ham radio operator (W4ZPZ), an Eagle Scout, a founding member of the NAIC Triad Chapter and a former member of the Gate City Kiwanis Club and the Greensboro Power Squadron. As a Greensboro Jaycee he ran concessions for the Greater Greensboro Open golf tournament and served as GGO Treasurer and as a board member for three years. He also belonged to numerous dental organizations and the First Presbyterian Church, Greensboro.

Always interested in electronics and things mechanical and musical, he built his own computer early in the computer age. In retirement, he focused on building mechanical musical instruments.

He is survived by his son, Mark Sheffield (Gail), daughter, Carol Sheffield (fiancé Gareth), grandchildren, Eliza McAllister (James) and Richard Sheffield, and his great grandson, Thomas Brooks McAllister. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 60 years, Janet Brooks Sheffield, and his brothers, Giles Sheffield and Gary Sheffield.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to River Landing at Sandy Ridge, 1575 John Knox Drive, Colfax, NC, 27235, to Hope Academy Greensboro, 1403 W. Florida Street, Greensboro, NC, 27403, or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
