David Mather Whitehead, Sr.

David Mather Whitehead Sr. aka “Diesel Dave”, 58, of High Point passed away Monday, June 16, 2025.  He was tragically killed by a drunk driver while working out of state driving a dump truck in Greenville, South Carolina.

David was born April 2, 1967, in Greenville, South Carolina.  The Lord decided David would exit this world the same hospital he entered it.  He was the son of the late Mather Foy Whitehead and the late Dorothy Henderson Whitehead.

He leaves behind his two beloved sons, David “DJ” Whitehead, Jr. of Charlotte and Brandon Whitehead of Lexington of whom he was so proud.  He also leaves behind his sister, Pam Karboski and husband Stan of Jamestown; niece, Sarah Karboski of Greensboro; nephew Alex Karboski, his wife Lacey and children Lucas and Sadie of Mebane.

David was a lifelong truck driver.  “Snowman” from Smokey and the Bandit started his love and passion for trucking as a kid and he never stopped loving the career path he chose.  He was a superior driver with well over a million safe driving miles.  He loved driving the big rigs and got to see the country, but he also loved driving every other kind of truck and heavy equipment.  It didn’t matter what he was driving, as long as he was in the driver’s seat, he was happy.  He was a straight shooter with a big personality, but he always brought laughter and made friends everywhere he went.

David never wavered in his faith even in the most difficult times and often shared it with others.  He had a gift of compassion, a caring heart and was always ready to lend a hand to anyone who needed it.  He will be truly missed by all who loved him.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, June 28, 2025, in the High Point Chapel of Wright Funerals-Cremations.  Burial will be private in Guilford Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 10:00 AM.
