Carolyn Black Southall

Colfax

Carolyn Elizabeth Black Southall made her transition on Friday, November 3, 2017 in Colfax, North Carolina.

She was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina on November 30, 1934 to Orvel Black, Sr. and Marcelette Lanier Black. The apple of her maternal grandmother’s eye, Carolyn was raised in a firm, but loving Presbyterian home that emphasized personal excellence and academic rigor. She graduated Cum Laude with a degree in Chemistry from North Carolina Central University in Durham, NC. She married Eugene P. Southall, Jr., M.D. in 1956 and taught high school chemistry at Manual High School in Kansas City, Missouri for several years before becoming a full-time housewife and mother of two children, Pamela E. Southall, M.D. and Eugene P. Southall, III, M.D. In addition to the vital role of homemaker, Carolyn was a very active and proud member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., spearheaded several community strengthening activities via The Links, Inc., and was dedicated to the enrichment and edification of children via Jack and Jill of America, Inc. She enjoyed crochet and bargello, loved watching movies, played the piano, was a very talented bridge player, loved sewing, was an enviable fashionista, and maintained her academic standards by taking noncredit college courses while a homemaker, including statistics. She returned to the work force in later years as a food inspector for the Department of Agriculture, State of Michigan. She returned to North Carolina (Colfax) following retirement where she enjoyed her remaining years as an unforgettable personality, friend, confidant, and counselor to many residents and staff members at her beloved River Landing at Sandy Ridge.

She is survived by her son and daughter, a sister (Melba Epps) and brother (Samuel A. Black), as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, and lifelong friends. Carolyn is deeply missed by those who love her, but she knew Jesus and for this we celebrate her return home!
