Bonita Jeane Hayes Floyd, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully on June 26, 2025, at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist High Point Medical Center to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She was surrounded by her loving immediate family at the time of her death.
Bonita was born on February 20, 1932, in the foothills of Millers Creek, Wilkes County, North Carolina to Bonnie Mast Hayes and Tom Wake Hayes, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her only sibling, Tommy Mast Hayes. She is survived by her husband, Joe D. Floyd, Sr.; her daughter, Kimberly Hayes Floyd of High Point, NC; her son Joseph D Floyd, II (Kellie) of Greensboro NC; and her three grandsons, Joseph D. Floyd, III of Breckenridge, Co; Samuel Stephenson Floyd of Wilmington, NC; and Jackson Hayes Floyd of Wilmington, NC.
Bonita graduated as Valedictorian from Millers Creek High School, and then attended Guilford College where she met the love of her life, Joe D. Floyd, Sr. They dated for two years and were married on April 19, 1952, and recently celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary. Bonita devoted the majority of her time to her husband and raising their two children. She was an integral part of the Joe D. Floyd Law Firm when Joe began his legal practice, and thereafter when Kimberly and Joe, II worked as attorneys with their father at the law firm. She managed the law firm’s personnel, accounting, tax filings and everything else that was required by the manager of a busy law practice.
Bonita was a long-standing member of Green Street Baptist Church, which was very dear to her heart. She taught teenage girls in Sunday School for a number of years and was currently a member of Marvin Maynard’s Adult Sunday School Connection Class. Bonita attended Green Street regularly until her health declined. She was a kind, caring, loving and wonderful Christian lady, who was loved, admired and respected by her family and many others.
Bonita was an avid and voracious reader, who read thousands of books, novels and papers, but most importantly to her, was her reading of a different translation of the Bible cover to cover every year for numerous years. She wrote and sent volumes of letters, notes and cards to loved ones and friends. She also gave many books to family members and friends, but not before reading each one and sharing her thoughts about the book to the recipient.
Bonita cherished the time spent with her husband, children and three grandsons, all of whom she deeply loved and adored. Whether at home, the beach or the lake, she treasured their time spent together. Although no immediate family members attended Duke University, she was an adamant and loyal fan of Coach K and the Duke University basketball team. Time stopped at the Floyd home when Duke basketball was televised.
Funeral services will be conducted at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, at the Green Street Baptist Church Worship Center with Dr. Mac Brunson and Dr. Robert Steele officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, July 10, 2025, at Purlear Baptist Church Cemetery, 181 Shingle Gap Road, Purlear, NC 28665.
The family is extremely grateful for the doctors, nurses and staff at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist High Point Medical Center who assisted Bonita during the final hours of her life.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that Memorial contributions may be made to Green Street Baptist Church, 303 Rotary Drive, High Point, NC 27262, or The Salvation Army of Greater High Point or The American Heart Association.
