Bill Hagar
Archdale
Bill Hagar, 89, of Archdale, peacefully passed away June 7, 2017 to be with the Lord and his wife Nancy who preceded him in death in 2007. Although they met each other later in life, they shared twenty-eight wonderful years together and filled their home with love and laughter. He leaves behind a loving family and numerous friends who will miss him dearly, as well as his beloved pets Gracie and Tippy.
A private graveside service was held June 10, 2017, officiated by Reverend David Williams.
He served his country honorably in the Korean War and retired from the US Army after twenty-five years of service. His second career was with Sands Vending Service where he worked for over twenty years. During his retirement years he adored traveling the country, gardening, and caring for his grandchildren.
Affectionately known as Papaw to most in his community, he was an avid hunter who enjoyed running his beagles and Atlanta Braves baseball. He was known for his vibrant sense of humor and constant pranks on the most unsuspecting of us. He was a unique combination of someone who had a love for life and had a firm understanding of what was important… the simplicity of living a life with those you love. His keen awareness of the significance of making memories over obtaining material possessions was only impaired by his territorial attachment to his remote control, especially the volume button. He took joy in reminding people that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and was heartbroken when Spiros experienced a fire and was forced to close in order to rebuild. At the end of his life he said he had no regrets, but if we were to guess at one, it would certainly be not being able to attend the grand re-opening at his favorite restaurant. If there is a cafe in heaven, you can rest assured he is definitely sitting in a booth, telling new jokes, eating eggs scrambled light, and enjoying a good cup of coffee. We are saddened by his passing, but rejoice and grieve simultaneously, as we know he is celebrating in heaven with those who have gone before him. His family will continue to remember the values he instilled into us and of course carry on the tradition of pulling for the Atlanta Braves.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests you consider an act of kindness for another person, such as anonymously paying for a meal for an elderly person eating alone. Memorial donations to Hospice of the Piedmont would also be a wonderful way to honor Papaw, as they diligently and gently cared for him at the end of his life. Hospice made certain his transition was a painless and tranquil experience for not only him, but his beloved family. We will be forever grateful for their love and support at the end of his journey.
