Betty Jean Smith
High Point
Mrs. Betty Jean Smith, 82, of High Point, passed away Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at Hospice Home at High Point.
She was born in Portsmouth, VA on August 14, 1934, to the late Mary Magdalene Holloman and Van Dorn Longstreet. She is survived by her husband of sixty-one years, Robert E. Smith. Betty and Bob started their family in Charlottesville, VA and moved to High Point forty- six years ago.
Betty worked for Sears, Roebuck & Company, and then became a homemaker. The three things Betty cherished most were her family, her church and cooking. Along with Becky Hussey, she was instrumental in starting The Father’s Table, a program of Open Door Ministries. Forest Hills Presbyterian Church honored her service by designating a special day in her honor. Her passion was preparing nourishing meals for her family and for large groups. Her favorite recipe book was “Cooking for Fifty.”
Betty was predeceased by her mother Mary, her father Van, who served in the U.S. Navy under Admiral Perry, her brothers, James and Robert; and her sisters, Elaine and Nancy.
In addition to her husband Bob, she is survived by a daughter, Cathy den Boer and husband Pete of Woodstock, GA; son, Stephen Smith and wife Karen of Wake Forest, NC; son, Gregory Smith and wife Louise of Falls Church, VA; six grandchildren, Meredith Godbee, Angela den Boer, Jennifer Smith, Ben Smith, Rachel Smith, and Arthur Smith; two great grandchildren, Harrison and Evelyn Smith; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 10, 2017 at Forest Hills Presbyterian Church on Lexington Ave, High Point. A reception will follow the service at the church.
