Bettie Carroll Massey
High Point
Bettie Carroll Massey passed away on May 15, 2018, after a very brief illness. Bettie was born in the community of Mountain View in Stokes County on October 23, 1931. Her parents, Edwin Blaine Carroll and Annie Terrell Carroll, both came from families steeped in the value of education. Therefore, after graduating from the Forsyth County Schools, Bettie attended East Carolina Teachers’ College (now East Carolina University). Upon graduation, she began her teaching career in Winston-Salem, where she soon met Vance Douglas (Doug) Massey. They were married on June 18, 1954. A few years later, the couple moved to High Point where Bettie took a job with the High Point City Schools and Doug took a job with North State Telephone Company. After settling in High Point, they had a son, Vance D. Massey, Jr. and a few years later, another son, John Carroll Massey. In 1961, the new family was part of the group that helped establish Forest Hills Presbyterian Church.
Unfortunately, Doug Massey died unexpectedly a few months later. Bettie, as a widow at the age of 30, was left with a five-year-old and a three-year-old. She dedicated her life to looking after her sons and teaching her students. For most of her teaching career, Bettie taught third grade at Oak Hill Elementary School. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma International Society for Key Women Educators. Bettie retired in 1992, about the same time that grandchildren arrived. Through her retirement, Bettie enjoyed her grandchildren, volunteered with Mobile Meals, worked with retired teachers’ groups, and worked-out six days a week at the Fitness Center at the hospital. She finally slowed up about a year ago, and spent her last days at Brookdale Skeet Club.
Bettie was predeceased by her husband, Doug Massey, and her younger son, John Massey. She is survived by her son Van Massey and wife Margaret Hartley Massey, grandson Stewart Douglas Massey, granddaughter Anna Roueche’ Massey, sister June Carroll Mazyck, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
On Sunday, May 20, 2018, funeral services will be held at Forest Hills Presbyterian Church at 836 West Lexington Avenue in High Point. Visitation begins at 1:00 p.m., followed at 2:00 p.m. with the funeral service officiated by The Reverend Joseph Blankinship. After the funeral service, family and friends are invited to a graveside service at Mountain View Baptist Church located at 1042 Mountain View Church Road outside of King, NC.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to Forest Hills Presbyterian Church.
