Bessie Oleta Martin Moore
High Point
Bessie Oleta Martin Moore (Maw Maw Bessie) went to heaven on Monday, April 11, 2016, where we know she was joyously reunited with her husband, Brock and her son, Rayford, who preceded her in earthly death.
Bessie was born on March 11, 1915 in Stokes County, North Carolina, the oldest child of Arthur Ellington Martin and Nellie Mae Knight Martin. Both of her parents died in the flu pandemic of 1918, leaving Bessie and her younger brothers, Samuel Taylor and Thomas Ellington, to be raised by their grandparents.
On December 25, 1930, Bessie and Brock were married at the courthouse in Stuart, Virginia. They raised their three children in and around the High Point area. Bessie helped to support her family by checking groceries at the Big Bear/Food Lion, where she was a dedicated employee for 30 years. Bessie was most proud of the fact that her three children all graduated from college, while she and Brock had only a limited formal education.
Bessie was a faithful disciple at Christ United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Character Builders Sunday School Class. Bessie was never happier than when she was surrounded by her large and loving family and friends, preferably around her kitchen table covered with her home-cooked meals. The more people she could feed, the happier she was.
Bessie is survived by her son, David Moore, Sr. (Peggy): daughter, Kay Hill; daughters-in-law, Patsy Moore and Brenda Moore; grandchildren, Sharyn Andrews (Roy), David Moore, Jr. (Penny), Kevin Hill (Kari), Britt Moore (Karen), Kelly Sanchez (Cesar), Brian Moore (Elizabeth), and Brock Moore (Heather); great-grandchildren, Sara Britt Grein (Dalton), Caitlin Andrews, Sophie Sanchez, Ethan Moore, Jake Moore, Jesse Sanchez, Holden Hill, Brennen Moore, Kennedy Hill, Ellie Grace Sanchez, Jack Moore, Catherine Hill, Hobby Moore, Abby Sanchez, Sam Hill, Grant Moore and Ivey Moore; two great-great grandchildren, Libby and Dalton Grein; and her daily companion for the last decade, her great-grand dog, Duke.
A celebration of Bessie’s life will be held on Wednesday, April 13, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Christ United Methodist Church, with burial to follow at Floral Garden Cemetery. A time of Fellowship with the Family (no lines) will be held from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Tuesday, April 12, 2016 in the Christ United Methodist Church Family Life Center.
In lieu of flowers, memorials should be made to Christ United Methodist Church, 1500 N. University Parkway, High Point, NC 27262.
