Ann Welborn Gray

Peggy “Ann” Welborn Gray, 79, of Colfax, NC passed away September 22, 2024, at Moses Cone Hospital.

Ann was born May 15, 1945, in Surry County to the late Charles Lee and Mattie Macy Welborn.

Ann was a graduate of Warren Wilson College and UNC-Greensboro.  She retired from the Winston-Salem Forsyth County School System after teaching first grade for thirty years.  Ann was a faithful member of Smith Grove Baptist Church where she served as church clerk and sang in the choir for numerous years. She demonstrated her faith through her love, kindness and selflessness, and always had an encouraging word.  She was a hard worker who enjoyed helping others.  Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren and keeping in touch with her entire family.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Howard Gray of the home; two sons, Gregg Gray (wife, Leigh Ann) of Jamestown and Neal Gray (wife, Victoria) of Kernersville and her two grandchildren, Andrew of Jamestown and Anna of Kernersville.  Also surviving are her sister, Betty Jo Bame of Elkin; her brothers, R.J. Welborn of Greensboro and George Welborn of Yadkinville; brother-in-law, Andrew Gray (wife, Phyllis) of Colfax; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Kathleen Wells, Mary Tucker, and Hallie Welborn; her brothers, Ralph, Harold, Blaine, and Dwight Welborn; and sister-in-law Christine Bame.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, September 26, 2024, at Smith Grove Baptist Church cemetery in Colfax with Reverend Bruce Freeman officiating.

The family will visit with friends following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Smith Grove Baptist Church, 2707 Sandy Ridge Road, Colfax, NC 27235.
