Richard Silbaugh Shreve (Dick) (85) (06/18/1939 - 06/24/2024)

Dick passed away peacefully at home on June 24, 2024, with his wife of 60 years, his children, their spouses, and his grandchildren by his side.

Dick was born on June 18, 1939, to the late Marguerite & Richard H Shreve in Nanty Glo, PA.  He is a former resident of Dale City, VA (where he raised his family), Bellefonte, PA (where he retired), and High Point, NC (where he moved to be near family in his final years). Preceded in death by his parents and his sister Loretta Steward.  He is survived by his loving wife Frances E. (Robison) Shreve married in October 1964. Other surviving members of his family include son, Tim, (Erin) Shreve of Eugene, OR; daughter, Jill (Thomas) Hanson of Winston Salem, NC; and his three grandchildren, Zoey and Zack Hanson of Winston Salem, NC and Ian Shreve, of Eugene, OR; and sister Lila Lane Turner, Austin TX.

Following graduation from Nanty-Glo High School in 1957, Dick embarked on a 45 year career in the airline industry.  He joined Allegheny Airlines in June 1957, where he served in local managerial positions and met the love of his life.  He joined the Air Transport Association (ATA) in Washington DC in 1968.   Dick worked for ATA for 34 years.  Following the airline's disastrous event of 9/11/2001, Dick made the decision to retire.  He hung up his tie, put on his “Pappy” hat and picked up his fly rod to retire in Bellefonte, PA., the location of his favorite fishing streams.

Dick was a treasured member of his family.  He loved and enjoyed spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren, and son and daughter-in-law.  Dick loved sitting, talking, laughing, and sharing a “decent” meal with his family. Dick was a friend to many throughout his life.  He loved dogs and spent many hours walking in the woods with his loyal canine companions.

In retirement, Dick volunteered for The Salvation Army, the Veteran’s Administration and youth fly fishing programs.  He was an avid letter writer, both to family, friends and customer service complaint departments.

Dick’s passion for the outdoors was intrinsic to his quality of life.  He loved to hike, hunt, and had a strong devotion to fly fishing for trout and salmon.  This love of the outdoors led him back to Centre County, PA after his retirement.  Dick was often accompanied by his very close friend, Terry Taterus, as they traveled extensively throughout the U.S, including Alaska, Hawaii and Canada in pursuit of their fishing interests. Dick passed this love of the outdoors down to his children and grandchildren. When he was unable to continue his passion of fishing and hunting, Dick enjoyed sitting on his deck, bird watching and feeding the local wildlife in his backyard.

In April, 2019, Dick was diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD).  Following four years of kidney dialysis treatments, he decided to enter Hospice. His remains will be returned to Center County Memorial Gardens in Pennsylvania for his final resting.  His family is planning an intimate, private service.

Donations can be made in his name to Pennsylvania Fly Fishing Museum Association www.paflyfishing.org
