Having kept the faith, run the race, and finished the course; Floyd Thomas Craven passed away at the High Point Hospice House on November 14, 2024. He was born September 26, 1935, in Coleridge, NC, Randolph County, to the late Daniel N. Craven and the late Evelyn Gray Craven.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Ethel Poole and Edna Freeman.
Left to cherish his memory, his beloved wife of 68 years, Mary Faye Albright Craven; daughter, Kelly Craven and granddaughter, Novie Craven, both of Washington, DC; a son, Jonathan Thomas Craven and wife Caitlin of Belews Creek, NC; nephew, Mark Freeman and wife Angie, and their children.
Nothing defined Floyd more than his caring spirit and his respect for others regardless of race, profession or status in life. His love for others was surpassed by only his love for God and his family.
He was proud to serve his country as a Cpl. in the United States Marine Corp from 1956-1958. Floyd graduated from Coleridge High School, High Point College (High Point University) in 1959. After graduating, he received his CPA certificate and became partners with Bowman, Blue, Fulp and Craven, CPA’s.
In 1992, he along with his partner Bill Blue, opened their office, Craven, Blue and Co, CPA’s. He retired in 2012 after 50 years. His dedication to his profession was profound. In return, his clients respected and appreciated him.
Floyd willingly gave of his time and talent to numerous organizations serving on their boards and committees. At HPU, he became a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. He served on the board of trustees of HPU since 1992 and was a Life Member since 2010. He was the past president of the Alumni Association and received High Point Alumnus of the year, the Distinguished Alumni Service medal and Lifetime Achievement Award. He also served on the Panther Club Board. In 1998, the Floyd Craven Investment Club was established at HPU in his honor by a close friend, James E. Foscue.
He was active in the YMCA serving on the Metro Board of Directors in many capacities, and Camp Cheerio Board. He coached Midget League Basketball (1968-1978) and served a co-commissioner of Girls Midget League Basketball. He was inducted into the YMCA Hall of Honor in 1992. He was a member of High Point Rotary Club for 34 years and received the Paul Harris Fellow in 1997.
Floyd has been a member of Lebanon United Methodist Church since 1960, where he became very active serving faithfully until his health no longer allowed him.
Floyd’s hobbies included running, where he participated in multiple 5K and half marathon races. He enjoyed sports, especially basketball and baseball, having excelled in both in high school. He was an avid reader and a great animal lover. He loved to travel with Faye, especially out west and Canada. He just as enthusiastically enjoyed being with Faye at home.
Celebration of Life service will be 2:00PM November 21, 2024, at Lebanon United Methodist Church; 237 Idol Street, High Point. The service will be live streamed.
Visitation will follow in the Fellowship Hall.
