Ermel Hurley Oakes

Ermel Hurley Oakes, 85 years of age, of Sophia NC, passed away Saturday March 16, 2019 at Randolph Hospice in Asheboro.

She was born Sept. 14, 1933 in Grundy VA, she was the daughter of the late George Hurley and Laura Ratliff Hurley.

Ermel was of the Christian faith. She enjoyed gardening, canning vegetables and traveling. She took many trips up and down the east coast including, but not limited to, Indiana, Maine and Florida.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her first husband Amos Swiney, baby daughter Donna Kay Swiney, brothers Tivis Hurley, Lee Hurley and Pete Hurley, sisters Glady Dales and Viola Swiney.

She is survived by her husband Donald Oakes of Sophia, daughter Retta Bonnie Thomas and husband Brady of Randleman NC, sons Randy Swiney and wife Barbara of Bristol, TN, Rick Swiney and wife Linda of Grundy VA, Fred Swiney of Asheboro NC, Billy Oaks of Sophia, Dave Hurley of Randleman NC, brother Delbert Hurley of Grundy, VA, sister Lorraine Layne of Grundy, VA. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday March 24th at 2pm. The service will be at Sophia Baptist Church located at 4082 Millikan Rd, Sophia, NC 27350. Pastor Bill Barnes will be officiating the service.
