Hugh Clements Bennett, Jr., 81, son of Hugh Clements Bennett, Sr. and Gaye Terry Bennett, passed away Sunday, November 11, 2018, in Greensboro, NC at the Carriage House Senior Living Community after a period of illness. He died peacefully just hours after a meaningful visit with his wife, daughter, son-in-law, and grandsons.
Born August 28, 1937, in High Point, NC, Hugh passed away on Veteran’s Day and himself was a veteran who served in active duty as a first lieutenant in the US Army. His true joy in life began on June 4, 1960, when he married Harriet Smithdeal. They enjoyed fifty-eight years of marriage in almost constant companionship, sharing both work and hobbies. Hugh and Harriet have one daughter, Jennifer Eaton Bennett, who married Douglas A. Mays and gave them three grandsons.
He was active in St. Mary's Episcopal Church in High Point. During the twenty years that Hugh and Harriet enjoyed their weekend home in Valle Crucis, NC, he was also active at the Chapel of the Holy Cross there. He also was a member of the "Apple Butter Gang," who faithfully cooked and sold apple butter at Holy Cross's annual country fair.
Hugh is survived by his wife, Harriet Smithdeal Bennett, of High Point; daughter, Jennifer Eaton Bennett, son-in-law, Douglas Allen Mays, and grandsons, Stuart Eaton Mays and Duncan Alexander Mays, all of Charlotte, NC; brother, Joe Gerome Bennett, and sister-in-law, Carolyn Ray Bennett, of Thomasville, NC, and their family; and Harriet’s sister, Peggy Smithdeal Tatum, of Loudon, TN, and her family. He joins his grandson Angus Clement Mays, who died in 2000.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, November 14, 2018, at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in High Point. His ashes will be interred at the Chapel of the Holy Cross in Valle Crucis at a later date.
A celebration of his life will be held immediately following the memorial service at Rixster Grill, 3815 Tinsley Dr, High Point, NC, 27265.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 108 West Farriss Ave, High Point, NC 27262.
